The „Laboratoire national de santé“ is recruiting an Experienced Technical Responsible Food Microbiology (Msc or PhD) (m/f) for the Unit « Surveillance Alimentaire » of the Department Health Protection in a full time position (40 h/week) with a permanent contract starting at the earliest convenience.


About the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS) and the Unit « Surveillance Alimentaire »

 The Laboratoire national de santé (LNS) is a public institution under the supervision of the ministry of Health in Luxembourg. Organised as a multidisciplinary institute and supported by a professional services team, the LNS includes four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection, in addition to hosting the National Center of Pathology and the National Center of Genetics.

The LNS has its new premises in Dudelange, with state of the art, modern infrastructure in line with recent developments in medical sciences.

Its objective is to develop scientific and analytical expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases. Its ultimate mission is to serve patients and citizens and offer excellence in health care.


The Unit « Surveillance Alimentaire » is part of the Department Health Protection and consists of a multidisciplinary team with strong expertise in analytical chemistry, molecular biology and food microbiology. The Unit ‘Surveillance Alimentaire’ is ISO 17025:2017 accredited and hosts 13 National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) in food control and food contact materials.

In view of substantial activity expansion of the activities in Food Microbiology, in line with the European Legislation, the Unit « Surveillance Alimentaire » is now looking for an experienced and driving technical responsible to strengthen further the existing team.

Job description

As a scientist, you will be in charge of:

  • Managing the food microbiology analysis program in collaboration with the national competent authorities
  • Validating the results of the analyses
  • Developing and implementing new methods of analysis in food microbiology, including the writing of standard operating procedures
  • Collaborating with the DNA-sequencing platform in LNS for genotyping purposes
  • Help implementing new areas of activity (e.g. food allergens, species differentiation by DNA barcoding)
  • Participating in the workshops organized by the European reference laboratories
  • Participating in training workshops abroad, for example in Germany
  • Managing and developing further the quality aspects in your field of expertise, including:
    • The maintenance of an ISO 17025-accredited system in food microbiology analysis
    • The management of the flexible scope of accreditation
    • The monitoring of regulatory standards (ISO) in food microbiology
  • Collaborating with the Unit head and the other technical responsibles to maintain and improve the technical part of the quality management system (including metrology)
  • Implementing the procedures developed by the LNS centralised Quality Management and this via the close collaboration with the Quality Referent of the Department Health Protection

Job specific skills:

The candidate should have

  • A MSc or PhD in biology, biochemistry, food sciences or a related field, with a specialization in food microbiology and biotechnologies (a specialization with PhD will be considered as an asset)
  • Good theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular biology techniques used in food microbiology
  • Working experience in a laboratory accredited ISO 17025:2017, including track record of implementation and/or setting-up of accreditation/quality processes
  • Good knowledge of the ISO 17025:2017
  • Good general software skills
  • Mandatory fluency in the three following languages: English, French and German (oral and written)
  • Knowledge of Luxembourgish will be considered as an asset
