About the LNS

The „Laboratoire national de santé“ (LNS) is a public institution under the supervision of the ministry of Health in Luxembourg. Organised as a multidisciplinary institute with a dedicated support services team, the LNS includes four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection. In addition, the LNS hosts the National Center of Pathology and the National Center of Genetics.

The LNS has its new premises in Dudelange, with state of the art, modern infrastructure in line with recent developments in medical sciences.

Its objective is to develop scientific and analytical expertise related to the prevention, diagnostics and monitoring of human diseases. Its ultimate mission is to serve patients and citizens and offer excellence in health care.


About the mission

The scientific advisor will be a member of the support team, reporting to the director as a senior advisor/project coordinator.  The appointee will provide scientific and academic expertise, support the expanding portfolios of the LNS including multi-site and large EU grants and directly initiate cross-departmental projects within the LNS and its external partners.


Main activities

  • In conjunction with the Director, drive the process of project ideas from governance processes to completion
  • Assist Department Heads and initiate grant applications that comply with the mission of the LNS
  • Provide support and contribute to the scientific strategy of the various research departments, take part in the strategic planning of research units , participating and supporting the administration
  • Partner closely with business and strategy partners to analyse new projects and assess readiness for governance decisions
  • Gain a deep understanding of the strategic direction and intellectual developments of LNS projects and research portfolio, and its impact on other national and international research areas
  • Monitor the research and project portfolio, tracking its evolution and anticipating risks and issues for mitigation and resolution
  • Ensure the follow-up of portfolio, research and project budget/expenditure in liaison with finance and direction
  • Provide key support and initiative to the departments in multi-site grants applications and multi-center applications to the EU commission, as is relevant to the mission of the LNS.
  • Perform scenario analysis to quantify the impact of decisions on projects and research on the overall activities of the LNS
  • Provide comprehensive data analysis, creation of project documentation, and coordination of teams
  • Contribute to the LNS large scientific project and scientific research branding as defined in the mission: presentation to potential partners and liaising and interacting with members of other research institutions
  • Interact with the LNS communication manager and thus directly promote the societal dimension of research and dissemination of research results to the public (through articles, etc.)
  • Organize relevant medical and scientific events (e.g. workshops, conferences, lectures) in conjunction with the LNS communication manager


Required qualification and skills

  • PhD in Natural Sciences (for example Biology, Biochemistry, etc.)
  • Proven track record of coordinating large program grant applications
  • A certification in one of the following disciplines is a plus: Project/Program Management (Prince 2, Agile PM, PMP, MSP, etc.)
  • At least 5 to 10 years postdoctoral experience
  • Rigor, motivation, scientific creativity and originality, writing skills, conciseness, sense of priority and ability to work with others
  • Exceptional scientific integrity
  • Strong and proactive monitoring of the assigned tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Languages skills: excellent command of English, additional knowledge of German and/or French would be considered a strong asset
