The Laboratoire national de santé (a Luxembourg public institution) is recruiting an Technical Responsible experienced in Pesticides (PhD Chemistry or Biochemistry) (M/F)


for the Unit ‘Surveillance Alimentaire’ of the Department Health Protection in a full time position (40h/week) with a permanent contract starting at the earliest convenience.


About the LNS


The Luxembourg National Health Laboratory, “Laboratoire national de santé” (LNS) is a public institution operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in Luxembourg. It is organised as a multidisciplinary institute, which along with an administrative department, includes six scientific departments related to the fields of morphological and molecular pathology, genetics, medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection.


The LNS has new premises with modern, top-notch infrastructure to respond to the requirements and most recent developments in medical and analytical sciences. The purpose of the LNS is to develop analytical and scientific expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases, to ensure the role of a national control and reference laboratory and to provide medico-legal services.


The LNS contributes to the development, harmonisation and promotion of laboratory methods in projects in cooperation with other laboratories and develops research and teaching activities in collaboration with ad hoc partners in Luxembourg and abroad.


The Unit ‘Surveillance Alimentaire’ is part of the Department Health Protection and consists of a multidisciplinary team with strong expertise in analytical chemistry, molecular biology and food microbiology. The Unit ‘Surveillance Alimentaire’ is ISO 17 025 accredited and hosts 12 National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) in food control.


In view of substantial activity expansion of the NRL Pesticides, in line with the European Legislation, the Unit ‘Surveillance Alimentaire’ is now looking for an experienced and driving technical responsible to strengthen further the existing team.

About the position


As a scientist, you will expand the pesticide activities inside the Unit. . Therefore, you role will include the following:


  • Optimise existing methods and develop new methods for the analysis of single- and multi-residue methods in different food and feed matrixes (using QuEChERS and/or ASE extraction, UPLC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS)
  • Validate methods according to the SANTE-guideline
  • Organise and structure the day-to-day activities in the laboratory
  • Supervise the analytical work in the laboratory and validate the analytical results
  • Participate in the daily maintenances and problem-solving related to the analytical instruments (UPLC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, etc.)
  • Develop strategies for the management of pesticide reference standards
  • Participate in the management of the ISO 17025-accredited quality control
  • Participate in the networking of the laboratory (EU and National Reference Laboratories)
  • Collaborate with other laboratories and administrations of the official control and food safety agencies of Luxembourg

  • A PhD in chemistry, biochemistry or a related field, with specialisation in HPLC, UPLC, GC, MS and MS/MS
  • Experience in troubleshooting and basic maintenance of chromatographic instruments
  • Experience in analysing pesticides and/or other contaminants in complex matrixes
  • A track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and communications at scientific conferences
  • Organising ability, leadership qualities, flexibility
  • Experience with quality control and accreditation processes. Knowledge of the standard ISO 17025 will be considered a great asset.
  • General software skills (Microsoft Office and chromatographic software as OpenLab, Empower, Chemstation, Masslynx, Masshunter, etc.)
  • Fluency in French and English (oral and written). Knowledge of German and Luxembourgish will be considered an asset.
