Ongoing projects

  • EIRENE, Research Infrastructure for EnvIRonmental Exposure assessmeNt in Europe (2025 – permanent)

EIRENE, Infrastructure de recherche pour l’évaluation de l’exposition environnementale en Europe (2025 – permanent) :

EIRENE (https://eirene.eu/) aims to create new capacities for human exposome research and assessment of risks associated with environmental exposures by developing a network of harmonized laboratories, environmental studies, population cohorts, and databases. It will advance our understanding of the role of the exposome in the development of chronic disease. As such, EIRENE will play a key role in developing new strategies and interventions for protecting population health, preventing chronic diseases, and advancing precision medicine.

The LNS is the National Node Lead Institution for Luxembourg: in this role, we have included the accredited hospitals (CHL and CHEM), the Luxembourg National Data Service, and the research institutes (University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg Institute for Science and Technology, Luxembourg Institute of Health, and Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research).

  • Epidemiological surveys in human biomonitoring and in exposure assessment

Currently, the LNS Health Protection Department is running two surveys on the field :

    1. The LëtzHBM survey in the general population:

LëtzHBM measures the exposure to chemical substances in the general population across Europe for chemicals that may pose a risk to health. This helps to develop appropriate policies to protect public health. In Luxembourg, the survey focuses on two age groups: children aged 6 to 11 years and adults aged 18 to 39 years. If you want to participate in the LëtzHBM survey, click here.

    2. The Healthcare survey and the Waste management survey in the working population :

Ces enquêtes évaluent les niveaux d’exposition à des substances chimiques spécifiques à chaque secteur. Elles contribuent ainsi à l’élaboration de lignes directrices et de politiques visant à protéger la santé des travailleurs.

  • PARC (Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals)

PARC (Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals), le Partenariat pour l’évaluation des risques liés aux substances chimiques (2022-2029) :

PARC (https://www.eu-parc.eu) aims to develop next-generation chemical risk assessment to protect human health and the environment. It supports the European Union’s Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability and the European Green Deal’s “Zero pollution” ambition with new data, knowledge, methods and tools, expertise and networks.

LNS is the Grant Signatory for Luxembourg: in this role, we have included the research institutes in Luxembourg as Affiliated Entities (University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg Institute for Science and Technology and Luxembourg Institute of Health).

The LNS is the permanent deputy in the Governing Board, together with the Health Directorate that is the principal representative for Luxembourg.

The LNS is strongly involved in the implementation of the PARC work plan, with a main focus on human biomonitoring and exposure assessment, innovative laboratory and sampling methods, health-based interpretation of monitoring data and integrative risk assessment.
The LNS has a leading role in several PARC projects:

« Beyond food: Organic contaminants in daily environment » ; « PFAS in breast milk and infant health » ; « Occupational Biomonitoring of emerging chemicals: A new approach » ; « Health-based guideline values for indoor air ».

Stakeholders are invited to join PARCopedia, the online knowledge management and community platform created in PARC, which is open to the whole community of professionals in chemical risk assessment.

  • HBM4EU – science and policy for a healthy future

HBM4EU – science and policy for a healthy future (2017-2022)

HBM4EU (https://www.hbm4eu.eu/) has been set-up to coordinate and advance human biomonitoring in Europe. The program has generated evidence of the actual exposure of citizens to chemicals and the possible health effects in order to support policy-making.

The LNS was the Grant Signatory for Luxembourg: in this role, we have included the research institutes in Luxembourg as Affiliated Entities (Luxembourg Institute for Science and Technology and Luxembourg Institute of Health).

The LNS was in charge of the human biomonitoring for Luxembourg. The results for the country have been integrated in the European Human Biomonitoring Dashboard and will be transferred later on in the Information Platform for Chemical Monitoring from the European Commission (IPCHEM, https://ipchem.jrc.ec.europa.eu/).
