Experienced Laboratory Technician Food and Indoor Microbiology (BAC +3) (m/f)

Type of contract: Part-time and undetermined duration contract (CDI)

The “Laboratoire National de Santé” (LNS) is a public institution under the supervision of the ministry of Health in Luxembourg. Organised as a multidisciplinary institute and supported by a professional services team, the LNS includes four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection, in addition to hosting the National Centre of Pathology and the National Centre of Genetics.

The LNS has its new premises in Dudelange, with state of the art, modern infrastructure in line with recent developments in medical sciences. Its objective is to develop scientific and analytical expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases. Its ultimate mission is to serve patients and citizens and offer excellence in health care.

The Department Health Protection consists of three Units:

  • The Unit “Surveillance Alimentaire” consists of a multidisciplinary team with strong expertise in analytical chemistry, molecular biology and food microbiology. The Unit is ISO 17025 accredited and takes care 14 National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) in food control.
  • The Unit “Environmental Hygiene and Human Biological Monitoring” has strong expertise in indoor pollution, occupational hygiene and human biomonitoring. The Unit is ISO 17025 accredited and working towards an expansion of the accreditation ISO 15 189 for the human biomonitoring activities.
  • The Unit “Medical Expertise and Data Intelligence” hosts the medical, epidemiological and toxicological expertise in the Department, including the team of field sampling nurses who go on-site to take samples in the houses of patients for the national surveillance programs of indoor pollution in Luxembourg.

Job description:

As a laboratory technician, you will:

  • Work under the direct supervision and guidance of the Technical Responsible, who has direct reporting line to the Unit Head
  • Receive, encode and process samples
  • Perform laboratory work related to the airborne microbial contaminants and/or microbial compounds analysis, including the quantification and identification of moulds and bacteria
  • Perform laboratory work related to foodborne bacteria and virus analysis, such as classical microbiology, PCR, RT-PCR and sequencing
  • Experience with dd-PCR would be an asset
  • Participate in the optimization of existing methods and in the development of new methods under the supervision of the Technical Responsible
  • Participate in the validation of the developed methods according to the quality system requirements
  • Participate in the daily maintenances and troubleshooting of the laboratory equipment
  • Take part in daily quality control activities (document management, procedure writing, calibration, metrology, etc.)
  • Be involved in the management of consumables stock and purchasing
  • Be available to work on Saturdays and on days prefixed by the laboratory

This list of tasks should not be considered exhaustive. Missions may vary depending on the specific needs of the Unit.

Job specific skills:

  • Laboratory technician formation (BAC +3) or “Laborantin” formation, with strong and proven experience in microbiology and molecular biology
  • Experience of more than 5 years in microbiology, preferentially in the field of indoor environments and air quality
  • Knowledge of GC-MS, LC-MS and other analytical techniques is considered an asset
  • Good knowledge of the standard ISO 17025 and preferentially working experience in an accredited laboratory (ISO 17025 or 15189)
  • Good working proficiency in English. Fluency in French or German (oral and written). Luxembourgish will be considered as an asset.
