an Epidemiologist (Communicable diseases) (m/f)

Ref° 322

 for a full time (40 h/week) role and a permanent contract for the Department of Microbiology.

 

About the Laboratoire national de santé

The LNS is a major player in Luxembourg’s healthcare sector, serving the country’s patients, doctors and hospitals. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Social Security, the LNS is a multidisciplinary public institution organized around six medical departments, two of which are designated as national diagnostic centers for human genetics and pathology respectively.

The LNS employs around 400 highly qualified staff with diverse backgrounds. The main purpose of the LNS is to develop analytical activities and scientific expertise relating to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases; to act as a national control or reference laboratory; and to carry out forensic missions. The LNS also collaborates with the University of Luxembourg and other biomedical research institutions, both nationally and internationally, on research and teaching activities.

In particular, in the field of diagnostics, the LNS covers the following fields of application: medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine, environmental medicine, morphological and molecular pathology, and clinical genetics, as well as sequencing for rare diseases, oncology and pathogens.

About the MICROBIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

The department of Microbiology at the LNS has approximately 50 employees and is subdivided into three services:

  • Bacteriology, Mycology, antibiotic resistance and hospital hygiene
  • Virology and Serology
  • Pathogen Sequencing

The department of microbiology offers reference laboratory activities in partnership with various other public and private laboratories in the country. At the same time, it works closely together with the Ministry of Health and Social Security including the Inspection Sanitaire (INSA), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), on epidemiological matters.

MAIN TASKS

For core-business:

  • Review surveillance data on an on-going basis to establish baselines and identify trends, outbreaks or clusters. Ensure emerging threats are recognized and communicated in a timely manner by analysing and interpretation of complex data (including genomic data).
  • Conduct complex statistical and epidemiological analyses for data drawn from a variety of surveillance sources.
  • Develop and draft epidemiological outputs including regularly reports, alerts and scientific briefings.
  • Establish and maintain communicable diseases surveillance systems.
  • Provide timely and accurate submission of alert pathogens to national and international stakeholders (for example ECDC).

In addition:

  • Survey and develop horizon scanning tools to identify newly emerging pathogens and to support risk assessment.
  • Participate in the scientific working groups to keep up to date of current trends and data in the epidemiology of communicable diseases.
  • Contribute to ongoing European projects.
  • Prepare and deliver educational materials and lectures to professional and public groups in order to maintain awareness and understanding of infectious diseases epidemiology and control.

The above list is not exhaustive and further tasks could be added according to the needs and strategy of the department.

PROFILE

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Epidemiology
  • Scientist (Master or PhD) in Microbiology with knowledge in Epidemiology or statisticians are also encouraged to apply

 

Required Skills

  • Demonstrate knowledge of epidemiologic research methods and techniques relevant to infectious disease surveillance.
  • Be able to adapt to situations to meet emergency or changing program requirements.
  • Prioritize tasks efficiently and work independently with strong quality control and attention to detail.
  • Possess skills for using statistical analysis software, such as Stata, SAS, or R as well as Microsoft Programs including Access, Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Be fluent in English.
  • Being proficient in French/German and Luxembourgish is considered as valuable asset.
