Laboratory Technician in Viral genomics (m/f) Ref°527

Type of contract: Full-time and determined duration contract (CDD)

The Laboratoire national de santé (Luxembourg public institution) is recruiting a  Laboratory Technician in Viral genomics (m/f)  for a full time (40 h/week) role and a fixed-term contract  (from 18 up to 21 months )for the Department of Microbiology.

The « Laboratoire national de santé » (LNS) is a public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in Luxembourg. As a multidisciplinary institute, the LNS consists of four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection. In addition, the LNS is also hosting the National Center of Pathology and the National Center of Genetics. The LNS has its premises in Dudelange since 2013.

The mission of the LNS is to develop analytical and scientific expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases and to ensure the role of a national control or reference laboratory as well as to carry out forensic tasks. The institution also contributes to the development, harmonization and promotion of technical laboratory methods in close collaboration with local and international analytical laboratories. Within the scope of its responsibilities, the LNS is also leading research and teaching activities in collaboration with partners in Luxembourg and abroad.

With its modern infrastructure in line with the recent evolution of medical and analytical sciences, the LNS is an ambitious laboratory with innovative projects that increase its expertise in public health.

Job Description

The Department of Microbiology is looking for a Laboratory Technician in Viral Genomics in the framework of an EU project aiming to expand the national genomic surveillance for acute respiratory infections. Key responsibilities are:

  • participate in the development and optimization of sequencing protocols for respiratory viruses
  • develop, implement and optimize Digital PCR protocols for quantitative respiratory virus assays
  • participate in the validation of the developed methods according to the quality system (tests for method validation, SOP redaction…)

Qualifications & Skills

To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate a high level of technical skill and intellectual rigor and should have:


  • Bachelor’s degree (BAC +3) with strong experience in molecular microbiology
  • Experience in next generation sequencing (Illumina and/or ONT platforms) and in digital PCR
  • Knowledge of other analytical techniques is considered as an asset
  • Understanding of the quality management systems in the laboratory setting
  • Fluency in French and/or English is required. German and/or Luxembourgish will be considered as an asset
  • Ability to work autonomously and in a team


  • Authorization to practice in Luxembourg
  • Knowledge of the standards ISO 15189 and ISO17025
  • Strong organizational skills and structured way of working
  • Good communication skills
  • Sense of responsibility and confidentiality
