About LNS

The « Laboratoire national de santé » (LNS) is a public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in Luxembourg. As a multidisciplinary institute, the LNS consists of four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection. In addition, the LNS is also hosting the National Center of Pathology and the National Center of Genetics. The LNS has its premises in Dudelange since 2013.

The mission of the LNS is to develop analytical and scientific expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases and to ensure the role of a national control and reference laboratory as well as to carry out forensic tasks. The institution also contributes to the development, harmonization and promotion of technical laboratory methods in close collaboration with local and international laboratories. Within the scope of its responsibilities, the LNS is also carrying out research and teaching activities in collaboration with partners in Luxembourg and abroad.

With its modern infrastructure in line with the recent evolution of medical and analytical sciences, the LNS is an ambitious laboratory with innovative projects that increase its expertise in public health.

About the Analytical Chemistry Department

The Analytical Chemistry Service (SCAN) at LNS is specialized in:

– identification and dosage of illicit drugs seized by police or customs,

– control of pharmaceutical products,

– detection of drugs and pharmaceuticals in water and wastewater,

– the detection of fire accelerants following fires,

– chemical characterization of cannabis and cannabis-derived products.

 

SCAN works closely with the justice system, the Ministry of Health and the Directorate of Health. It is ISO 17025 accredited for the dosage of certain drugs and certified for the control of medicines. It plays an active role at both national and European level in harm reduction projects and in the collection of data on the use of illicit drugs. SCAN is a member of the European Network of Drug Control Laboratories (GEON).

SCAN is currently setting up a laboratory specialized in the detection of highly toxic products for CBRN analysis requests, and will continue to accredit analyses linked to the detection and dosage of narcotics and drugs.

 

About the position

– Work under the supervision and guidance of the department’s technical managers.

– Carry out qualitative and/or quantitative analyses of drugs and pharmaceuticals in water and  seizures.

– Participate in method validation in accordance with quality system requirements.

– Participate in the drafting and/or updating of quality system documents.

– Participate in inventory management and purchasing of reagents and consumables.

– Participate in the administrative task of the service.

 

This list of tasks should not be considered exhaustive. Tasks may vary and evolve according to the specific needs of the service.

 

Qualifications and skills

– Qualification as a laboratory technician (minimum DUT Chemistry, BTS Analytical Chemistry or other).

– Good working knowledge of analytical techniques, particularly chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS, LC/MSMS, LC/QToF, HPLC/UV) and infrared (IR).

– Good knowledge of standard Microsoft Office software.

– Good knowledge of ISO 17025, experience of working in an accredited laboratory is an asset.

– Organizational and teamwork skills, ability to work independently.

– Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of French, German and Luxembourgish is an asset.
