As such, the LNS contributes to the development, harmonization and promotion of laboratory methods in collaborative projects with other laboratories and develops research and teaching activities in association with partners in Luxembourg and abroad. The LNS is a multidisciplinary institute organized in six scientific departments, i.e. 1) morphological and molecular pathology, 2) genetics, 3) medical biology, 4) microbiology, 5) forensic medicine and 6) health protection, as well as one administrative department (www.lns.lu). The LNS houses in a new modern building equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure in line with the recent requirements in medical and analytical science.

The Department Health Protection consists of two Units:

The Unit ‘Surveillance Alimentaire (ALI)’ is in charge of a major part of the food control in Luxembourg and hosts 12 National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) in food control. The multidisciplinary team has strong expertise in organic chemistry, molecular biology and food microbiology. The Unit ‘Surveillance Alimentaire’ is ISO 17 025 accredited.

The Unit ‘Environmental Hygiene and Human Biological Monitoring (SUBI)’ has strong expertise in indoor pollution, migration analyses, and biological and occupational surveillance.
