Why these visits?

Health professions are at the heart of many current and future challenges. By offering students the opportunity to discover these professions from the inside, we aim to spark their curiosity, demystify laboratory work, and show them the direct impact these careers can have on society.

Inspiring encounters

Our experts, representing our six diagnostic departments — Legal Medicine, Microbiology, Genetics, Pathology, Health Protection and Medical Biology — share their passion and daily work with the students. Through interactive exchanges, they highlight the major challenges of public health and demonstrate how science contributes to improving the well-being of the Luxembourgish population.

By discovering inspiring career paths and asking questions directly to committed professionals, students can consider future careers in these fascinating and evolving fields. Practical information

Visits last approximately two hours and can be conducted in French, German, Luxembourgish, or English.

To ensure an optimal experience, we recommend that groups do not exceed 35 participants.

Medical Biology
The Department of Medical Biology offers a wide range of activities, including specialised analyses in biochemistry and hormonology, diagnosis of inborn errors of metabolism, and allergology. The department is responsible for neonatal screening in Luxembourg and has developed the country’s only medical toxicology laboratory.

National Center of Genetics
The National Center of Genetics (NCG) covers all areas of human genetics, including clinical genetics, genetic counselling, and a wide range of genetic diagnostics — from conventional karyotyping to modern next-generation sequencing (NGS). The NCG provides consultations and genetic diagnostics to individuals and families, for example in the context of hereditary cancer predisposition, rare hereditary diseases, or prenatal and family planning genetics.

Legal Medicine
The Department of Legal Medicine mainly works at the request of Luxembourg’s judicial authorities, the police, and other government bodies. Its main areas of activity include all aspects of forensic medicine: genetic identification based on molecular biology methods, toxicology reports for autopsies, issues related to living persons, and the identification and analysis of narcotics or other substances suspected of containing medicinal compounds.

National Center of Pathology
The National Center of Pathology (NCP) provides a full range of cytological, histological, and molecular diagnostics for cancerous and precancerous lesions, as well as inflammatory conditions.

Microbiology
The Department of Microbiology provides diagnostic services in bacteriology, including mycology, virology, and sequencing, with an increasing focus on syndromic approaches and surveillance. The department actively participates in national and European projects related to monitoring, preparedness, and developing action plans against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), all aimed at improving public health responses to infectious diseases.

Health Protection
The Department of Health Protection supports public health and healthcare by addressing problems caused or aggravated by environmental factors — including indoor pollution, workplace settings, consumer products, and food.
