The Laboratoire national de santé (Luxembourg public institution) is recruiting an Clinical Microbiologist Ref °271 for a full time position (40h/week) with a permanent contract for the  department of Microbiology.

About the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS) and the Department of Microbiology:

The “Laboratoire national de santé” (LNS) is a public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in Luxembourg. LNS is organized as a multidisciplinary institute and supported by a professional services team, the LNS includes four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine, and health protection, in addition to hosting the National Center of Pathology and the National Center of Genetics. The LNS is based at Dudelange, with state of the art, modern infrastructure in line with recent developments in medical sciences. Its objective is to develop scientific and analytical expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis, and monitoring of human diseases. Its ultimate mission is to serve patients and citizens and offer excellence in health care.

The department of Microbiology at the LNS is progressive, dynamic, innovative and housed in purpose built, state of the art facilities of the highest standards. The department offers a large range of technical equipment, including a Maldi-Tof, a SIRSCAN ORION, a SENSITITRE reading system, a complete molecular biology platform including NGS facilities and a dedicated BSL level three laboratory.

The department of microbiology offers reference laboratory activities in partnership with various other public and private laboratories in the country. The department is nominated as National Reference Laboratory for Acute Respiratory Infections. At the same time, it works closely together with the Ministry of Health and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on epidemiological matters, as well as the National Service for Infectious Diseases as far as diagnostics is concerned.

The department is subdivided into three services:

  • Bacteriology, Mycology, antibiotic resistance and hospital hygiene
  • Virology and Serology
  • Epidemiology and Microbial Genomics


About the mission :

The LNS is now seeking a forward-looking Clinical Microbiologist for the Service of Bacteriology and Mycology. The candidate will provide clinical leadership in microbiology, enhance liaison with the hospitals in Luxembourg, further develop laboratory capacity with a view of being nominated as a reference laboratory for antibiotic resistance, mycology and mycobacteria, and participate in international and national monitoring networks and research.


  • Direct supervision of diagnostic methods and examination of specimens in the Bacteriology and Mycology Service, which is accreditated ISO 17025:2017 and ISO 15189:2012 for more than 90% of its analyzes
  • Daily biological validation of analyses concerning bacteriology, mycology and mycobacteria samples and advisory services to biologists/clinicians
  • Validation of new techniques in accordance with the requirements of ISO 15189 and writing of the validation files
  • Ensuring a good working relationship with other departments of the LNS
  • Maintain the excellent clinical liaison with the main hospitals in Luxembourg and the private labs; where appropriate, create new synergies
  • Participate in the LNS surveillance responsibilities at European level (ECDC: several Networks; OMS)

Research and Education

  • Liaison with the stakeholders in health research in Luxembourg and participate in research
  • Participation in Microbiology education program at the University of Luxembourg

The above list is not exhaustive and further tasks could be added according to the needs of the department.


The candidate has to:

  • Be a “médecin/Pharmacien biologiste’  (Medical doctor with at least 9 years of  university education), specialised in medical microbiology
  • Be eligible to obtain a license to practice (autorisation d’excercer) in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg (
  • demonstrate advanced knowledge in bacteriology and antimicrobial resistance as well as in mycology (dermatophytes, Aspergillus, invasive fungal infections) in both, conventional and molecular methods ; expertise in mycobacteria would be an advantage.
  • Bring working experience in an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory
  • Proof minimum 4 years experience in a similar position
  • Fluency in French as daily working language, fluency in German or Luxembourgish; good command of English
  • Demonstrate experience in team management, decision making and ability to focus on priorities
