Le Laboratoire national de santé (Luxembourg public institution) is recruiting an Experienced Project manager for (inter)national science-policy initiatives in Environmental Health/Medicine (PhD degree) for the Unit Medical Expertise and Data Intelligence (Department Health Protection) in a full time position (40h/week) with a permanent contract starting at the earliest convenience.


About the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS) and the Department Health Protection

The « Laboratoire national de santé » (LNS) is a public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in Luxembourg. Organised as a multidisciplinary institute and supported by a professional services team, the LNS includes four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection, in addition to hosting the National Center of Pathology and the National Center of Genetics. The LNS has its new premises in Dudelange, with state of the art, modern infrastructure in line with recent developments in medical sciences. Its objective is to develop scientific and analytical expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases. Its ultimate mission is to serve patients and citizens and offer excellence in health care.


The Department Health Protection supports public health policy, focusing on food security and environmental pollution, through servicing, expert advice and scientific research. The Department consists of two units that are in charge of the laboratory analyses in human food and in environmental and occupational health, respectively. In 2020, the Department has initiated the setting up a third Unit, Medical Expertise and Data Intelligence (MEDI). This Unit hosts the epidemiological and toxicological expertise in the fields of environmental health. The Unit is now also becoming in charge of the direct patient-care, including the consultations in Environmental Medicine, and the direct collaborations with the hospitals. Finally, the Unit represents Luxembourg in the science-policy initiatives at national and international level. You will work under the direct supervision of a medical doctor specialized in environmental and occupational health and with a PhD in Epidemiology (currently she is heading the Department Health Protection).

Job description

As a senior project manager, you will:

  • For the Dpt Health Protection:

Be in charge of the project management of the science-policy initiatives:

The LNS is participating in the “Human Biomonitoring for Europe“(HBM4EU) initiative and foresees to contribute substantially in the next “Partnership for Chemical Risk Assessment” (PARC).

This includes the following tasks:

  • Active participation and follow-up of meetings with the project coordinators, work packages- and task-leaders;
  • Distribution of the tasks among the different Units in the Department Health Protection;
  • Follow-up of Milestones and Deliverables together with the different Unit heads. Each Unit head is accountable for the quality and the content of the technical reporting of his/her respective Unit;
  • For the MEDI-Unit: as epidemiologist and public health expert, you participate directly in the different tasks and you assist the coordinator of the nurses in the technical reporting;
  • Preparation and follow-up of legal and GDPR-requirements, with support of the LNS Legal Advisor and Data Protection Officer;
  • Preparation and follow-up of the budgets and financial reporting, with support of the LNS Chief Finance Officer and Budget Controllers;
  • Preparation and follow-up of participation of research institutes and other actors in Luxembourg. As LNS is the program manager in these science-policy initiatives in environmental and occupational health/medicine for Luxembourg, we are in charge of the technical, financial and legal aspects for our affiliated entities as well. For these aspects, you work closely together with the LNS Legal Advisor, Scientific Advisor and Chief Finance Officer.
  • Ensure that the Department steps in new (inter-) national initiatives.


  • For the MEDI-Unit:
    • Participate actively in the carrying out of the pregnancy cohort in the MEDI-Unit:

The LNS is setting up a pregnancy cohort with follow-up of the offspring until the age of 12. The cohort will investigate the impact of the pre-natal and early-life indoor exposome on children’s health.

  • Be in charge of the organization of (inter-) national scientific seminars and congresses in Environmental Health/Medicine, as organized by Luxembourg
  • Write scientific publications and disseminate the results on (inter)national seminars and congresses;
  • Participate in the research projects to support the continuous excellence towards the patients and the population nationally and internationally and set-up project collaborations with public health actors in other countries.

This list of tasks should not be considered exhaustive. Missions may vary depending on the specific needs of the MEDI-Unit and the future science-policy initiatives of the Department Health Protection.

Job specific skills

  • PhD Degree in public health and epidemiology or equivalent;
  • A previous Master degree in bio-engineering, bio-medical sciences or equivalent formation offering profound insights in the biological and (patho-)physiological processes of the (human) organisms;
  • Proven track record in the coordination and project management of international large-scale consortia, in the domain of environmental health/medicine;
  • Proven scientific track record in environmental health in peer-reviewed scientific journals;
  • Perfect fluency in English (oral and written);
  • Experience in successful collaboration with General Practitioners and MD-Specialists in the domains of Environmental and Occupational Health/Medicine will be considered as a great asset;
  • Experience in the setting-up and carrying out of cohorts in environmental health will be considered as a great asset;
  • Expertise in statistical software (SPSS, R, etc.) and GIS software will be considered as an asset;
  • Fluency in French and/or German (oral and written) will be considered an asset.
