The Laboratoire national de santé is recruiting an experienced technical lab manager (PhD in Chemistry) (m/f) for the Unit Biological Surveillance and Environmental Hygiene of the Department Health Protection in a full time position (40h/week) with a permanent contract starting at the earliest convenience.


About the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS) and the Unit of Biological Surveillance and Environmental Hygiene

The LNS is a public institution operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in Luxembourg. The LNS ensures the role of a national control or reference laboratory and develops analytical and scientific expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases. As such, the LNS contributes to the development, harmonization and promotion of laboratory methods in collaborative projects with other laboratories and develops research and teaching activities in association with partners in Luxembourg and abroad.

The LNS is a multidisciplinary institute organized in six scientific departments, i.e. 1) morphological and molecular pathology, 2) genetics, 3) medical biology, 4) microbiology, 5) forensic medicine and 6) health protection, as well as one administrative department ( The LNS houses in a new modern building equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure in line with the recent requirements in medical and analytical science.

The Unit Biological Surveillance and Environmental Hygiene is part of the Department Health Protection and consists of a multidisciplinary team with strong expertise in indoor pollution, food monitoring, migration analyses, and biological and occupational surveillance. The laboratory is ISO 17 025 accredited and working towards a supplementary accreditation ISO 15 189 for the biological surveillance activities.

The LNS is now looking for a driving technical manager (French: ‘responsable technique’) who will manage the day-to-day activity of the lab, increase activity, develop laboratory capacity and dynamically involve this multidisciplinary team in international and national monitoring networks and research.

Job description

As the technical manager of the lab, you will be in charge of

  • Organizing and structuring the day-to-day activities in the Unit
  • Supervising the analytical work in the Unit and validating the analytical environmental results
  • Guiding the team members to the latest version of ISO 17025 and to the ISO 15189 in close collaboration with the respective quality referents and the LNS central quality team, in order to realize a fully operational technical-quality synergy in the Unit
  • Organizing the structured reporting of analytical output, quality output, financing and investment to the Responsible of Unit and Head of Department
  • Creating new collaborations and activities and enhance service level provision
  • Introducing a culture of applied research in the Unit by actively stimulating, attracting and supervising research activities in health and environment, in order to guide the Unit to new directions and challenges in the analytical field and health and environment in a broader context
  • Supporting the Responsible of Unit and Head of Department in the talent management and professional development of each of the team members
  • Supporting the Responsible of Unit and Head of Department in the client relationships


  • PhD in Chemistry, with specialization in HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS, etc.
  • 5 to 10 years of experience and track record of the successful management of a chemical laboratory in the field of environmental and occupational health
  • Experience in implementing an accreditation process, a practical knowledge of the ISO 17025 and 15189 will be considered a great asset
  • A perfect fluency in English and French (oral and written). Working proficiency in German or Luxembourgish is an asset or readiness to learn Luxembourgish over one year.
  • Experience in the reorganization of an existing laboratory is strongly valued
  • Experience in risk assessment and environmental/occupational toxicology
  • Track record in attracting and supervising research activities in the field of environmental and occupational health, including international publications
  • Experience in human biomonitoring is an is strongly valued
