This post provides an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated medical geneticist with a particular interest in working in a molecular genetics service to join the National Center of Genetics at the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS) in Luxembourg.

About the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS)

The « Laboratoire national de santé » (LNS) is a public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in Luxembourg. Organised as a multidisciplinary institute and supported by a professional services team, the LNS includes four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection, in addition to hosting the National Center of Pathology and the National Center of Genetics. The LNS has its premises in Dudelange, with state of the art, modern infrastructure in line with recent developments in medical sciences. Its objective is to develop scientific and analytical expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases. Its ultimate mission is to serve patients and citizens and offer excellence in health care.

 

The National Center of Genetics (NCG) at the LNS

The NCG is responsible for all aspects of human genetics related health care in Luxembourg. A major goal of the NCG is to build up genomic medicine and precision oncology, using a state of the art sequencing facility, and to provide high-level health care to the Luxembourgish population. The NCG is a major stakeholder of two national public health programs: the Plan National Maladie Rare and the Plan National Cancer. The NCG also hosts the joint LuxGen Genome Sequencing Center between LNS and LIH and performs collaborative translational research focused on rare diseases and cancer. We engage in training activities, in particular of medical students within the bachelor program at the University of Luxembourg.

The Molecular Genetics Unit at the NCG is hiring an experienced and motivated medical geneticist with an interest in developing and applying state-of-the-art molecular techniques to improve patient care. Within a multidisciplinary team of experienced professionals, the medical geneticist will take part in molecular genetic diagnostics in the context of hereditary diseases and molecular oncology and continues development of new diagnostic (NGS-based) activities. He or she will also have the opportunity to participate in the clinical consultation activities as well as in research and training activities of the center.

Main responsibilities

  • Medical interpretation and validation of genetic tests (NGS and other), writing of reports
  • Establishing and coordinating NGS-based diagnostic tests including bioinformatics workflows in close collaboration with molecular biologists and bioinformaticians
  • Participation in multidisciplinary clinical meetings
  • Performing medical genetic consultations
  • Active participation in research projects and applying scientific knowledge in expanding the diagnostic and research portfolio of the NCG
  • Active participation in the development and maintenance of a quality system based on (ISO 15189)
  • Training of resident physicians, biologists, scientists and taking part in the medical education at the University of Luxembourg

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Medical doctor specialised in clinical/medical genetics, a PhD would be an asset
  • Previous working experience in a diagnostic molecular genetic setting, including writing and validating diagnostic reports is mandatory
  • Hands on experience in analysis of high throughput data and variant interpretation for:
    • Hereditary Genetic Diseases (Panel, WES and/or WGS data analysis)and/or
    • Comprehensive molecular oncology and molecular pathology
  • Experience of working with large datasets and a keen interest for- and hands on experience with- bioinformatic tools and pipelines would be an advantage
  • Ideally, the successful candidate also has experience in classical and molecular cytogenetics as well as clinical genetic consultations
  • Fluent in English. Working proficiency in either French or German. Luxemburgish is an asset.
