The Laboratoire national de santé (Institut public au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Epidemiologist specialized in environmental and occupational health (m/f), for the Unit ‘Medical Expertise and Data Intelligence(Department Health Protection) in a full time (40h/week), with a fixed-term contract of 24 months (“contrat à durée déterminée CDD”) starting at the earliest convenience.

 

About the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS) and the Department Health Protection:

The « Laboratoire national de santé » (LNS) is a public institution under the supervision of the ministry of Health in Luxembourg. Organised as a multidisciplinary institute and supported by a professional services team, the LNS includes four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection, in addition to hosting the National Center of Pathology and the National Center of Genetics.The LNS has its premises in Dudelange, with state of the art, modern infrastructure in line with recent developments in medical sciences. Its objective is to develop scientific and analytical expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases. Its ultimate mission is to serve patients and citizens and offer excellence in health care.

The Department Health Protection supports public health policy, focusing on food security and environmental pollution, through servicing, expert advice and scientific research. Historically, the Department consisted of two units that are in charge of the laboratory analyses in human food and in environmental and occupational health, respectively. In, 2021, the Department has initiated the setting up of a third Unit Medical Expertise and Data Intelligence (MEDI). The new Unit hosts the epidemiological, toxicological and medical expertise in the fields of environmental and occupational health, and this as an added value to the technical laboratory work. You will work under the supervision of the Department head who is a medical doctor specialized in environmental and occupational health and with a PhD in Epidemiology.

The Department Health Protection mainly works for the Ministry of Health and is an active partner in the European Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC). PARC is a 7-year science-policy Research & Innovation programme that has been launched in May 2022 and that is co-funded by the European Union. PARC aims to develop next-generation chemical risk assessment to protect human health and the environment and to support the EU Chemical Strategy for Sustainability and the European Green Deal`s “Zero pollution” ambition with new data, knowledge, methods and tools, expertise and networks. The programme involves 200 partners from 28 countries and the EU, including national and EU risk assessment and regulatory agencies as well as affiliated research organisations working in environmental, occupational and/or public health. As national institute, LNS is key partner in several work packages, including human biomonitoring and exposure- and human risk assessment in the general and in occupational populations.

Job description

As a Postdoctoral scientist working in the PARC project, you report directly to the Department head. More specifically, you will:

  • Set-up and carry out the epidemiological surveys in environmental and occupational health for Luxembourg. For the period 2023-2025, Luxembourg will participate in three cross-sectional surveys, i.e. (i) a general population survey with questionnaires and biological samples in 300 children aged 6-11 years, (ii) an occupational survey with questionnaires, occupational hygiene and biological samples in health-care workers, and (iii) an occupational survey with questionnaires, occupational hygiene and biological samples in waste management workers.
  • Support the senior epidemiologist from the Unit Medical Expertise and Data Intelligence in the set-up of a mother-child cohort in Luxembourg (pregnancy cohort with follow-up of the offspring until the age of 12);
  • Exploration of research questions and further data analysis of the surveys of the previous European partnership HBM4EU and that is now taken up further in PARC;
  • Data (statistical) analysis for the mixture risk assessment of occupational human biomonitoring data;
  • Publish your work in international peer-review journals and present at international conferences;
  • Participate in the different working groups and meetings in PARC related to epidemiology, health impact, and statistical data analysis;
  • Be responsible for the technical reporting in PARC for your tasks and the domains you are involved in.

This list of tasks should not be considered exhaustive. Missions may vary depending on the specific needs of PARC / the role of the Department in PARC.

Job specific skills

  • PhD Degree in public health, epidemiology, or equivalent is required;
  • A previous Master degree in bio-engineering, (bio)-medical sciences or equivalent formation offering profound insights in the biological and (patho-)physiological processes of the (human) organisms will be considered a great asset;
  • Proven track in setting up and carrying out different types of epidemiological surveys and reporting on epidemiological surveys in peer-reviewed scientific journals;
  • Very good knowledge of statistical software (SPSS, R, STATA etc.);
  • Expertise in GIS software will be considered an asset;
  • Knowledge and experience in chemical exposure and risk assessment based on human biomonitoring data is an asset.
