Laboratoire national de santé (Luxembourg public institution) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Scientist (m/f) – Microbial Genomics and Metagenomics, for a 2-years fixed-term contract

 A postdoctoral researcher position is available at Laboratoire National de Santé to help conduct a research project within the MICROH doctoral training unit funded by the FNR.

The objective of the project is to investigate how bacteria or fungi are associated with human papillomavirus virus (HPV) infections using metagenomic and amplicon-based sequencing approaches.

About the LNS

The “Laboratoire national de santé” (LNS) is a public institution operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in Luxembourg. It is organized as a multidisciplinary institute which, along with an administrative department, includes six scientific departments related to the fields of morphological and molecular pathology, genetics, medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection (

The LNS has new premises whose modern infrastructure is in line with the demands related to recent developments in medical and analytical science. The purpose of the LNS is to develop analytical and scientific expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases, to ensure the role of a national control or reference laboratory and to carry out medico-legal tasks.

The LNS contributes to the development, harmonization and promotion of laboratory methods in collaborative projects with other laboratories and develops research and teaching activities in association with ad hoc partners in Luxembourg and abroad.


Main activities

  • Assist with optimizing next generation sequencing protocols including metagenomic and amplicon-based approaches
  • Develop metagenomic pipelines to accurately and robustly identify human papillomavirus, bacteria and fungi in human cervical samples
  • Conduct statistical analyses to study patterns of co-occurrence of HPV, bacteria and fungi, and their relation to cervical lesions
  • General scientific project management including manuscript and grant proposal writing, helping to prepare ethical approval, data analysis, presenting work at conferences, assisting and teaching PhD students in relevant fields of expertise.


Candidate profile  

  • A PhD in health sciences, epidemiology, microbiology or related fields
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. French or German is considered an asset
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • At least 3 publications in international peer reviewed journal as a first author
  • Knowledge of HPV epidemiology, cervicovaginal micro- and/or mycobiome
  • Epidemiological and statistical data analysis skills
  • Microbial genomics and bioinformatics skills
