The “Laboratoire National de Santé”(Institut public au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg) is recruiting a Scientist (MSc or PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemistry-Physics) (m/f) for the Food Surveillance Department, in a full time (40h/week) fixed-term (1 year) position, starting  between August –September 2022

Possibility to convert the contract into a permanent contract after one year

About the Laboratoire National de Santé (LNS)

The “Laboratoire National de Santé” (LNS) is a public institution under the supervision of the ministry of Health in Luxembourg. Organised as a multidisciplinary institute and supported by a professional services team, the LNS includes four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection, in addition to hosting the National Center of Pathology and the National Center of Genetics.

The LNS has its premises in Dudelange, with state of the art, modern infrastructure in line with recent developments in medical sciences.

Its objective is to develop scientific and analytical expertise related to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases. Its ultimate mission is to serve patients and citizens and offer excellence in health care.

About the Unit “Surveillance Alimentaire”

The Unit “Surveillance Alimentaire” is part of the Health Protection Department and consists of a multidisciplinary team with strong expertise in analytical chemistry, molecular biology and food microbiology. The Food Surveillance Unit is ISO 17 025 accredited and hosts 14 National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) in food control. A head of unit and two technical managers, organized by analytical domain, currently lead the team.

Job description

As a technical and scientific domain manager, you will consolidate and develop the analytical domain of food contact materials and develop a new domain of consumer products analysis. To do this, you will :

  • Optimise existing methods and develop new single- and multi-residue methods in food contact materials (kitchenware, plastic and cardboard packaging, micro/nanoparticles, etc.) using techniques like ASE, UPLC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, GC-FID, etc.
  • Validation of new methods according to the European Reference Laboratory Guidelines, for ISO 17025 accreditation
  • Organise and structure the daily analytical work in the laboratory
  • Organise the participation in inter-laboratory tests in the areas under responsibility
  • Participate in the administration of the laboratory in association with the head of unit and other technical managers (management of the workload and work programs, communication with the laboratory’s customers, participation in the review of applications, etc.)
  • Supervise the analytical work in the laboratory and validate the analytical results
  • Participate in the daily maintenance and fault finding of analytical instruments (HPLC-FLD, UPLC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, etc.)
  • Develop strategies for the management of reference materials
  • Participate in the laboratory networking (European and national reference laboratories)
  • Participate in European projects (PARC)
  • Collaborate with other laboratories and administrations active in official control and food safety in Luxembourg
  • Develop and manage research activities, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals
  • Participate in training and conferences at national and European level

Profile

The candidate must have:

  • A Master or PhD in chemistry, chemistry-physics, biochemistry or a related field, with specialisation in analytical techniques (ideally HPLC, UPLC, GC, MS and MS/MS)
  • Experience in the analysis of organic molecules in complex matrices
  • Knowledge of industrial processes in plastics and/or cardboard manufacturing as well as knowledge of nanomaterials
  • A track record of publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presentations at scientific conferences
  • Experience with quality control and accreditation processes, knowledge of ISO 17025 will be considered an asset
  • Experience with daily maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical instruments (HPLC-FLD, UPLC-MS/MS, etc.)
  • Good general computer skills (Microsoft Office and chromatograph control software such as OpenLab, Empower, Chemstation, Masslynx, Masshunter, etc.)
  • Experience with a LIMS will be considered an asset
  • Organisational skills, ability to manage people, flexibility
  • A perfect fluency in English and good knowledge of French (spoken and written)
