The « Laboratoire national de santé » (LNS) is recruiting a Medical Doctor Specialist in Occupational Medicine within the Department Health Protection in a full-time position (40 h/week) with a permanent contract starting at the earliest convenience.

 

ABOUT THE LABORATOIRE NATIONAL DE SANTE

The LNS is a major player in Luxembourg’s healthcare sector, serving the country’s patients, doctors and hospitals. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Social Security, the LNS is a multidisciplinary public institution organized around six diagnostic departments, two of which are designated as national diagnostic centers for human genetics and pathology respectively.

The LNS employs around 400 highly qualified staff with diverse backgrounds. The main purpose of the LNS is to develop analytical activities and scientific expertise relating to the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases; to act as a national control or reference laboratory; and to carry out forensic missions. The LNS also collaborates with the University of Luxembourg and other biomedical research institutions, both nationally and internationally, on research and teaching activities.

In particular, in the field of diagnostics, the LNS covers the following fields of application: medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine, environmental medicine, morphological and molecular pathology, and clinical genetics, as well as sequencing for rare diseases, oncology and pathogens.

 

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH PROTECTION

 

The Department Health Protection supports public health and health care for problems caused or aggravated by the environment, including indoor pollution, the working context, consumer products, food and food contact materials. We fulfill this mission through servicing, expert advice and applied research. Our main stakeholders are the ministries, the hospitals and the services for occupational medicine in Luxembourg.

The Department consists of three services:

  • A Service for Food Monitoring that is carrying out laboratory analyses (chemical and microbiological) in human food and food contact materials;
  • A Service for Environmental Hygiene and Human Biological Monitoring that is carrying out laboratory analyses (chemical and microbiological) in environmental and occupational health;
  • A new Service for Medical Expertise and Data Intelligence that hosts the medical, epidemiological and toxicological expertise in environmental and occupational health/medicine. In this Service, the following activities have been set-up over the last 2 years :
    • A team of 5 nurses goes on the field to sample air, dust and surfaces in the houses or at the workplace of patients in case medical doctors suspect that the pathology of their patients may be caused by or aggravated by the environmental or working context;
    • The same team of 5 nurses together with the head of the Department Health Protection carry out the consultations at the National Service for Environmental Medicine Luxembourg, which is situated in the Hospital Center Emile Mayrisch (CHEM). Luxembourg has launched the new discipline of Environmental Medicine in November 2022;
    • One scientist is in charge of the European Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC), a 7-year science-policy Research & Innovation program co-funded by the European Union;
    • One epidemiologist is in charge of setting-up the surveys in the general and in the working population in environmental and occupational health/medicine, including human biological monitoring and/or exposure assessment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Organize and structure the day-to-day activities in the Service;
  • Supervise the work in the Service and validate the results;
  • Create new collaborations and activities and enhance service level provision;
  • Further enforce a culture of applied research for science-policy support in environmental and occupational health/medicine;
  • Guide the team members to accreditation ISO/IEC 17025 and eventually ISO 9001, this is done together with the Department quality coordinators;
  • Organize the structured reporting of technical output, quality output, financing and investment to the Department head;
  • Support the Department head in the client relationships;
  • Support the Department head in the further elaboration of the new discipline of Environmental Medicine in Luxembourg;
  • Carry out the consultations at the National Service for Environmental Medicine at CHEM until the end of 2024. For this, you will be supported by a medical doctor in occupational medicine who is professor at the University Hospitals of Gasthuisberg/Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium;
  • Organize multi-disciplinary case discussions with other medical doctors in Luxembourg;
  • Organize advanced education courses on disorders that may be caused or aggravated by the environment or the work; target population for these courses are the general practitioners and medical doctors in for example pulmonology, allergology, dermatology, neurology,… in Luxembourg.

This list of tasks should not be considered exhaustive. Missions may vary depending on the specific needs of the Service or the Department.

 

PROFILE

 

  • Specialist-physician (medical doctor MD) in occupational medicine;
  • Permission to work as specialist-physician in Luxembourg, via the procedure of the “authorization d’exercer” by the Ministry of Health (https://sante.public.lu/fr/espace-professionnel/demande-autorisation-exercer/professions-medecin/medecin-generaliste-specialiste.html);
  • Experience in management and in leading teams;
  • Ability to generate the relevant information from the daily working context to report to and interact with upper management levels and supporting services;
  • Fluency in French and English (oral and written) and good notions of German are required;
  • Will be considered an asset:
  • A PhD in epidemiology or data sciences;
  • Track record in attracting and supervising research activities in the field of environmental/ occupational health, including international publications;
  • Knowledge of the Luxembourgish language;
  • Result and client oriented mindset;
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills and structured way of working;
  • Strong reporting and leadership skills;
  • Excellent networking skills to collaborate with different clients and stakeholders.
