The Clinical Genetics Service offers specialized medical consultations to people who are concerned about, or may be at risk for, genetic conditions. These consultations are in-person visits at the LNS, with individuals or families. Each session is different and unique, based on the patient’s needs, but will typically include a comprehensive review of the patient’s medical history, a physical examination, the organization of various laboratory testing (including but not limited to genetic analysis), and a detailed explanation about the diagnosis, including what is known about its natural history and recommendations for management. Depending on the established diagnosis, genetic counselling sessions are organized, for the patients and for family members, to explain the inheritance pattern and recurrence risks of the disease, to discussing reproductive options, and to establish a familial screening strategy.
These consultations cover a wide range of topics, including children and adult constitutional genetics (intellectual disability, complex malformations, cystic fibrosis, ophtalmo-genetics, dermato-genetics, …), prenatal diagnosis, preconceptional genetic counselling for couples at risk, predictive genetic counselling (diagnosis of a genetic disease before its symptoms appear), and hereditary predispositions to cancers.
The Clinical Genetics Service works closely with all hospitals, private practitioners, and other healthcare providers, including the non-profit association ALAN – Maladies Rares Luxembourg.
Additionally, our clinical geneticists bring their expertise to various interdisciplinary case meetings, fostering a strong clinical collaboration between the National Center of Genetics and many healthcare professional and medical institutions in the Grand Duchy.
